Barcelona Calling: Our Top 10.
Gaudí’s beloved city encompasses more than 70 distinct neighbourhoods spread across ten districts. So just how are you meant to pick your favourite? With a little help from The Singular Space, of course.
Barcelona is one of the top European cities for quality of life. Its multicultural ethos, renowned food scene, excellent universities and mosaic of streets and neighbourhoods brimming with their own distinctive charm — plus proximity to the sea and an efficient, high-quality transport network — are just some of the reasons for the city’s enduring popularity.
Whether you’re looking for chic avenues, a family-friendly atmosphere, the bustle of student life or something a little more exclusive, Barcelona can oblige. At The Singular Space, we’ve put together our own top 10 of the city’s most extraordinary neighbourhoods. Happy exploring!
Uptown exclusivity
For those craving an exclusive lifestyle, Barcelona’s uptown neighbourhoods in the districts of Les Corts and Sarriá-Sant Gervasi should be your first ports of call.
Let’s start with Pedralbes, the city’s ritziest residential enclave, to the north of Les Corts. Here, the high life includes some unbeatable green spaces, such as the Parque de Cervantes and the gardens of the Palau Reial de Pedralbes. Art, history, a distinctive architecture, peace and quiet and plenty of greenery are the main points in its favour.
Sarriá, the last neighbourhood to be absorbed by the growing city, is another highly covetable place to live. It makes our top 10 thanks to its quiet, village-like feel. Narrow, winding streets, panoramic views, impressive manor houses and a wealth of unique nooks and crannies make it a favourite with anyone looking for an address to impress with a family atmosphere.
If elegance is your top priority, then Tres Torres is the neighbourhood for you. Between luxury apartment building and charming detached villas with secluded gardens, you’ll be spoiled for choice. It’s a peaceful area and one of the safest in the city. Predominantly residential, it boasts spotlessly clean streets and some world-class medical facilities.
‘Exclusivity’ and ‘exceptional views’ are the words that spring to mind when we think of Vallvidrera. In this sought-after neighbourhood, lying in Barcelona’s Sierra de Collserola – a true verdant oasis – historic buildings rub shoulders with modern detached villas. And, thanks to excellent transport links, you can be in the city centre in no time.
Last, but no less extraordinary, is Sant Gervasi – Galvany. This quiet neighbourhood is ideally placed for the city’s most prestigious educational institutions. It combines grand town houses, a delectable selection of shopping and dining options, a neighbourly atmosphere and a unique urban form — all the ingredients of an exceptional quality of life.
The chic, the historic and the modern, all in one place: there’s no need to choose.
Ambling down the Diagonal towards the old city, on the lookout for a safe, well-connected family neighbourhood close to a good selection of schools, we come to L´Eixample. One of Barcelona’s most attractive areas, L’Eixample is home to such famous Gaudí masterpieces as the Sagrada Familia and La Pedrera. You’ll also find plenty of green space and leisure options, for all-day family fun.
Right in the beating heart of the old city, Ciutat Vela, is one of Barcelona’s most iconic quarters: the Barrio Gótico.
Its labyrinth of narrow streets, cultural diversity, medieval architecture (with the odd flourish of modernism) and a seemingly endless choice of bars and restaurants make this open-air museum the perfect spot to absorb some of the magic of the ciudad condal, just metres from the sea.
Reaching the end of our tour, we enter the sanctum of boho-chic that is Vila de Gracia, an ideal choice if your dream includes an urban-village lifestyle. Myriad tiny streets and squares bustle with neighbourly conviviality, as whole families gather to enjoy the city. It’s a neighbourhood of intellectuals and artists, with a wide range of cultural enticements. If you’re here during its traditional neighbourhood festival, its decked-out streets are a truly magical sight. Add in Park Güell, some fabulous green spaces and proximity to the city centre, and the Vila de Gracia is hard to beat.
Barcelona is a city that embraces every imaginable taste and lifestyle. Come and see for yourself: stroll down its streets and tune in to the unique rhythm of each neighbourhood. We have no doubt that your extraordinary new home is waiting for you, in some special corner radiating life and history.
