For those who haven’t yet had the pleasure, The Singular Space is delighted to be your guide to these magnificent country manor houses, as unique as the landscape that surrounds them. For the perfect introduction, check out these three extraordinary homes.
“Cigarral” is the name given to the historic country mansions we find gracing the banks of the Tagus, perfectly positioned to enjoy panoramic views of the city of Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Once the summer residences of Toledo’s nobility, designed for leisure, entertaining and repose, some cigarrales are now exquisite family homes, while others have been converted into luxury hotels and restaurants. These very special properties unite nature, culture and history in a way that is utterly unique, each a little piece of Spain’s rich architectural heritage.
Their name may be an enigma, but Toledo’s cigarrales have inspired artists and poets.
The word “cigarral” is known to date back to the sixteenth century, but its origins are the subject of lively debate. Some believe it to derive from the local geology (perhaps from guijarral, meaning “pebbly”, or pizarral, “slatey”). Others draw a connection to the region’s distinctive grafted orchards (enjertales), or to Arabic words meaning “place of springs”. The most popular explanation is that it refers to the abundant cicada population that springs forth from the Toledan countryside at the first hint of summer.
“If a cigarral is unique among properties, it is not on account of the charming whitewashed house itself, nor of the secluded, sweet-scented gardens, nor of the surrounding olive groves. It is because it gazes upon Toledo, and that is its whole purpose. Nothing more – and who could ask for more! – than that.”
Dr Gregorio Marañón – A renowned resident of a Toledan cigarral. In 1922, he purchased the “Cigarral de Menores” (Toledo).
Cigarrales are country residences typical of the Toledo region, and unlike any other kind of property found in Spain. Built to a rustic, almost monastic aesthetic (many of them have served as monasteries at some point, or as the homes of senior clergy), they are invariably set in enchanting estates lavish with olive, almond and apricot trees.
These extraordinary homes were inspired by classical Roman and Arabic villas, designed to provide refuge from the blistering summer heat. They tend to be enveloped in cooling gardens bedecked with trees and fountains, which in Moorish times would have been jewel-like orchards, almost completely hidden but affording breathtaking views of Toledo.
The cigarrales have inspired such world-renowned literary greats as Miguel de Cervantes, Galdós, Tirso de Molino and Gregorio Marañón. Bewitched by their stunning natural settings, cultural heritage and panoramic views of the historic city, they sought to capture their beauty and uniqueness in their work.
