Tucked away in the residential enclave of Costa de Canyamel in north-east Mallorca, close to the Artà caves, is a gleaming white villa, a vision of geometric purity and a spectacular example of original Bauhaus design.

This fabulous villa was commissioned by renowned Hollywood photographer “Bernard of Hollywood” in the 1960s and stands on a 1,200-sqm plot with stunning sea views and a lushly exuberant garden.

Bruno Bernard, aka Bernard of Hollywood, was a German-American photographer who became a celebrity in his own right thanks to his iconic portraits of Hollywood’s most glamorous stars – including Marilyn Monroe. She and countless other legends of cinema’s golden age strutted through Bernard’s studio in Los Angeles, but he is best remembered for his infamous shot of Marilyn Munroe standing over a subway grate.

After returning to Europe he settled in Mallorca, where he commissioned this ravishing one-of-a-kind villa in the Californian Bauhaus style. Its timeless, sophisticated lines are every bit as fresh and beguiling today.

Stepping inside, we immediately see what the architect of this incredible property felt to be its most seductive asset: the stunning views over the Mediterranean that hold court over almost every room, making this a truly unique place to live.

In terms of layout, the property is arranged in two distinct parts: the main house and a self-contained apartment.

We enter at street level on the ground floor, finding ourselves in an airy, loft-style space where sensational panoramic glazing invites the sea into a 30-sqm living area, allowing breathtaking views to saturate the visual perspective of the room. A built-in kitchen overlooks the dining area, while the high ceiling (3.6 m) creates an exhilarating sense of space. Also on this level are various terraces and access to the solarium on the luxuriously proportioned roof terrace.

A staircase ascending from the ground-floor living area leads to three air-conditioned bedrooms, all with oversized windows overlooking the sea, and two luxurious marble bathrooms, one en-suite.

Terracing on every level means that magnificent views and fresh sea breezes can be enjoyed from every bedroom. On a clear day, you can spot Menorca on the horizon.

An outside staircase links the main house to the apartment, which has its own separate entrance. The kitchen, dining room and living room can all be found on this floor, plus an expansive main terrace with a stunning swimming pool and outdoor bar.

From the living room, another staircase takes us to the third floor, which reveals two further air-conditioned bedrooms and two separate bathrooms.

This incomparable home still evokes the glamour of 1960s Mallorca, while offering a timeless setting for twenty-first century life. It's ideal as second residency but it also could be a good investment as it already counts with a holiday license (for 6 beds).

All that’s missing is a new owner – one with a zest for the extraordinary.
