A haven of peace on the banks of the Escalante Marshes (Cantabria)

The second episode in our new series of short films, My Singular Space, is dedicated to a dream of a property resting in the quiet beauty of  Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park, in the province of Cantabria. In the film, current owner Emilio describes a home that’s positively beaming with sunlight, thanks to generous windows and the wild openness of this spectacular natural landscape. It’s a place to contemplate the shifting interplay of nature and the elements that makes the  Escalante Marshes so endlessly entrancing. Here, every season has its own special charms, to be admired in solitude or the easy company of those we love.

This unique home has a near-mystical calming effect on all who visit it. Its location, overlooking the wetland ecosystem and close to the village of Escalante, is part of its spell. “When I found this place, I knew it was different... You get a real feeling of stillness and peace. It’s a place to retreat from the rest of the world,” explains Emilio.

The landscape is always changing. You start to fall in with the tides and you’re aware of a continuous ebb and flow. The view outside your window is never exactly the same…” Emilio, current owner.

Built around twenty years ago, this property has also been in constant evolution, acquiring some additional features that add to its unique personality: pops of vivid colour on the walls, a dainty interior balcony topped with a wooden beamed roof and a unique charcoal-covered wall.

As he gives us a tour, Emilio talks eloquently of the memories each room evokes. “So many evenings spent here, both indoors and out… Sunrise is a moment of pure magic. Especially when you see it from the east-facing side, where there is a bedroom with a very large window... There are so many windows in this house; the light streams in from all directions.”

But what makes this property truly extraordinary is undoubtedly its setting: the wild green landscape of Cantabria, with several beaches close by. “The landscape is always changing. You start to fall in with the tides and you are aware of a continuous ebb and flow. The view outside your window is never exactly the same…”

Emilio concludes his reflections with the words of a man long acquainted with this sublime corner of the world: “What I enjoy the most here is the time I spend by myself.”
